I took the boys back to the pdoc today. He isn't quite sure what to make of Matthew's continued depression although it is better than it was. He is
also concerned about his lack of appetite. However, he agreed to give Biphentin a try. It is a drug only available in Canada and made by one of my former
employers. The active ingredient is methylphenidate (Ritalin) but it comes in a capsule with beads like Adderall XR. It is extended release like Concerta but
comes in many more doses from 10 to 80mg. We will see if this helps him in school. He isn't finishing his tests because he doesn't feel like it.
They take too much work.
If this doesn't help or makes him more depressed, I am thinking of asking about Strattera. It didn't help Alex but Matthew has different issues.
Alex's weird repetitiveness he isn't sure what to make of either. He doesn't know if it is behavioural or mood related. The easiest way to find out is to stop the Effexor so effective tomorrow, he is going off the rest of the Effexor. Health Canada is about 2 months behind their own deadlines right now so I am thinking Abilify will be later than we hoped.
Wish us luck with the Effexor withdrawl. It didn't go well last time we reduced the dose. I am hoping the Topamax will help balance things out this time.
He also agreed to go forward with referring him to the developmental pediatrician for the Asperger's dx. Apparently, he only sees new patients 2 days a year. This is absurd. There are 2 in my area but the other one, he says he (the pdoc) would do a better job of dx'ing him than this ped. If it is just a dx I want to get services, he will dx him for that purpose. DH and I decided we really want to know if that is what it is or not. Otherwise, I will lose the window of opportunity and it will also bug me wondering.
We also have to see an NP who runs a metabolism clinic about his cholesterol and triglycerides since they are not dietary. They could be hereditary as my sis who eats very carefully due to IBS and migraines also has high cholesterol. I think it could also be related to her hypothyroidism but her doc wasn't convinced.
Anyway, you are all up to date now. Alex is still annoying all of us and not getting the jokes that Matthew gets. DH is trying valiantly to stay calm (and doing a pretty good job especially since come April he will be the only one left of his dept. at work and has been told he can just work from home. Thankfully he speaks French.) And Matthew is being exceptionally affectionate, I think because he is feeling insecure and he needs the hug.
