My mother bought cards for my siblings to give to our dad for Father's day. She selected a card for my 14 year old bp sister that said something like
'... from your kid with a screw loose."
My sister didn't think it was funny but signed it anyway since she did not see the card until the day of. When it came time for my dad to open his gifts
and read his cards, my mom asked my dad to read this particular card out loud. I had to intervene and say "no, it's not funny." My dad put it
down and moved on... but my mother said, "Oh, it's not? I thought it was!" My sister then said, "It's not funny" and my mom
finally shut up- but sat there pouting for the rest of the day.
All this following a therapy session, that I was called into, to help clarify some communication problems between my mom and sis. The therapist clearly asked
my mother to stop "making fun of" my sister- because it hurts her feelings. She was also asked to stop nagging, using bad language and screaming at
her. My sister was in tears while explaining what she needs from my mom. Granted, she probably purchased the Father's day cards before the therapy
session, but couldn't she switch them with either or the other 2 kids or buy another one. How insensitive can someone be?
