I was flipping through a magazine and just happened to glance at the Adderal summary page on the reverse side of the advertisement. Right there front and center under bold title Warning it says Warning: Psychosis. Clinical epreience suggests that, in psychotic patients, administration of emphetamine may exacerbate symptoms of behavior disturbance and thought disorder.
Now, I am surprised they don't mention bipolar because psychosis is common bipolar, so it's not just people who are actively psychotic, this warning should be for people at risk for psychosis due to their illness.
Then later on down, "Individual patient response to amphetamines varies widely. toxic symptoms may occur idosyncratically at low doses. Symptoms: ....restlessness, tremor, hyperreflexia, rapid respiration, confusion, assaultiveness, hallucinations, panic states,...
Now, this warning is for Adderal, but it's not just for Adderal - it's all ADHD stimulant medications. I worry so much that stimulant medication is triggering this huge surge we're seeing in bipolar children. They will diagnose ADHD and stick a child on stimulant medication so quickly and without any screening whatsoever for bipolar. It's just frightening to me. I will always wonder if my son would have ever triggered his sz were it not for being on Ritalin and later Concerta. Many people carry the gene for bipolar and schizphrenia but live their whole life without it being triggered. I will always, always wonder.
hopping off soap box now...
