I live in a remote location in Alaska. My 10 year old son has been having difficulties since 1st grade; currently in 4th grade performing at a 2nd grade level due to his learning disability and mental stage.
After a few years of the educational system explaining they believe my son is ADHD, I decided to follow through on seeing a psychologist at a youth service. As a parent, I have been going through denial thinking why this disease happened ..My son has been on medication for a few years now, Straterra, and Adderall, including an anti-depression medicine Prozac. With the side-effects of Adderall, my son recently received a new prescription named Riddalyn (?).
Beginning of the school year, my son was removed from his elementary school, and placed in another school with specialized teachers. He currently is in a program that gives him a room with an assigned teacher (one-on-one). He still continues to have meltdowns, emotional outbreaks, hyper. Hes physically hurts teachers and other students; including tearing up classrooms.
Ive asked for additional assistance from our one-and-only youth service, and due to not being on Medicaid or Assistance, I do not qualify for their services, unless I would like to pay a fortune . To be honest, I my family is barely breaking even every month.
At this time, Im seeking assistance from Health and Social Services, and the school district. My spouse and I work fulltime jobs and earn too much money to qualify for assistance (just on paper bills add up). The resources in Alaska are minimal, especially in this town. We keep getting asked to send my son to a mental institution for a minimum of 30 days. Keep in mind the only way to get to this institution is by airplane due to my remote location.
Two days ago I was told by a friend that my son may not have ADHD, but Bipolar. To be honest with you, as soon as I send this message Ill be researching information on this disease.
I need any advice anyone could provide. I would be happy to clarify any questions you may have in regards to my situation.
