Travis has been off all meds for a good month....last night he got his keychain from NA for 90 days clean and sober....things at home have been good.

So did we have a true case of a child with BP or just your typical teenage behavior? Can you cope without meds?...This has been so confusing for me....second guessing myself on whether I should have put him on meds at all, when everyone else said i shouldn't have.

Its like a dream come true, and I am afraid of waking up. I know I should just relax and enjoy our time together, but I guess its hard not to keep that guard up.

Tracy I am also wondering the same thing about the meds with Travis---but it really depends on how often his mood cycles if he does have BP. If he is not having any stress in his life right now (no job, etc.) that could be why he is able to maintain such an even keel also. No school pressures and the like...that really reduces mood episodes for our kids with BP. Also, if no major traumas (break up with a girlfriend, etc.) happen, that can help him maintain the normal moods. I would wait to see how he reacts under stress or in a traumatic situation...that will be most telling I think.

This is just one of those things where time will tell. I hope he stays fine without meds. What a blessing that would be!

I think after living so traumatically, it's only time that can heal the non trust. I don't blame you for sleeping locked up still!! I think, like Heather said, only time will truly tell about bp or not. When I had Matt in rehab for 30 days, the pdoc said he wasn't bp, but dealing with substance abuse and depression. I'm not sure that was at all accurate since we still have behavior that is not explained. I'm glad things are going so much better!! If it's a dream, I hope you don't have to wake up!!!! Sweet dreams.

I agree with Chris and Heather. Jordon has been without meds also now for about a month (preparing for the Army

I like you just sit and wait for the bomb to expolde, but nothing yet????? He still could be self medicating though and I wouldn't know????

Kat has also been stable this past week. I am sure she is BP and even has mentioned it herself lately about some of her quirks. I have read that those with BP can go long periods of time, even months and things go well. I am thankful that Kat is somewhat stable right now but do not trust that it will saty like this forever. Her line of thinking still is skewed.

My dd has never been stable on meds because she wasn't on them long enough, however she is functioning but has little stress right now. She has made changes in our home and so have we in how we approach her, however I have no doubt she is bp. Like Heather said, I think it has a lot to do with stress and demands. Right now he is under your protective shell. He had some time away from you and sometimes I think that helps. Do not feel bad for giving him meds. Meds are taken for behaviors and he obviously exhibited those behaviors at the time and therefore needed those meds. Time will tell what he will need in the future but try your best to enjoy the moment. I know easy to say, hard to do. hugs.

I dreamed of many things when he was born ...

I have to agree with the others. Besides, it's summer & most people with bipolar do well in the summer & not in the winter because of seasonal affective disorder. My son is like a bear in the winter, just hibernates away. Usually by October when the autumnal equinox hits, he starts going down & winter is hard.

Well, work is not easy to come by here, and he did break up with his girlfriend, but things still have been ok with him. If he is stressed he isn't showing it like he use to i guess.

He did start a journal with his dad so they could talk issues that way since the two seem to butt heads alot. It was his idea, and so far both are using it.

He still talks about going to college in the fall, but he really hasn't started paperwork for it like he should. He said his sister is going to let him come there to live with her and her husband, but we will see. Not holding my breath.

He did make comment the other day about having places to stay if he got kicked out, not sure how that conversation got started, but I did tell him the only way he would get kicked out was if he disobeyed house rules, but I also said to him if he wanted to move out he could. Of course i don't see that happening to soon either, he has it so good at home still.

So thanks for all the encourgement, you ladies are awesome....

How wonderful that Travis seems to be growing up and doing well! Eerie comment about getting kicked out...ah...what are they thinking half the time? Well--hoping that was just out of thin air and there's nothing to it. I don't see him going anywhere without a job for sure. Is he still attending NA meetings? Job market right now in Ohio is awful!

Heather, yes he still goes to his NA meetings twice a week, that was a rule we set for him to live at home, and he looks forward to going. Last wednesday was 90 days for him.

Lynn, you said your son is preparing for the Army? how long do they require them being without meds? Travis' doc said in order for the Navy to take him he had to be off all meds for a year without incident. Just wondering.

That is a good question . I think all branches are different but that is something Jordon has yet to find out. i won't help him with this decision. I'll be there for him but if he wants this then he has to see recruiter ect... himself.

My husband and I want Travis to sign up for the service, but I don't see it happening. Maybe once he gets a job and sees its not easy paying for school and car maintenance he will change his mind.
