REPORT FROM THE FLOOD ZONE
Hi there. Thanks for your concern. I think I shared how we had three weeks of unseasonable cold and snow. Last Sunday we had the last snowstorm, which dumped an additional four inches on us and kept us from venturing out. As predicted by the weatherman, we got a warming trend on Tuesday with torrential rains throughout the area for two days. Our area was shielded at first by the shadow of the Olympic Mountains, but the second big storm came up from the south. The town we live in is mostly hilly, and, since we escaped much of the heavy rains, even the low lying areas near creeks escaped flooding.

Other parts of the state were hit hard, and, as you understand, the interstate going south and the interstate and all the highways going east were closed. We personally haven't suffered anything, but I can see how if something like this happened for an extended length of time, it would be like a siege. As it is, the only problems we personally have suffered are delays in getting packages and delay in a computer repair because the trucks transporting the parts couldn't make it through; also grocery shelves aren't as heavily stocked as normal.

Last year our state also had huge flooding, and this is a new phenomenon. The papers say part of the problem is climate change bringing more violent rainstorms than in the past, PLUS extensive clear-cutting of our national forests over the past thirty years coupled with heavy residential and commercial development of wetlands and on potential floodplanes.

Thanks again for your concern.
