This is sad, but reminds me of some of the things my own mother did. She clearly favored me in many cases, and it was hurtful to my sister. I was protective of my sister, but we still had a very difficult relationship. When my mom started doing some of the same things to our daughters, I was able to intervene and apparently stop most of it. I don't think mom really understood the problem, but she did stop. That helped my relationship with my sister a great deal.

This is a good resource to keep in mind as my daughter parents her son. I don't know that she could see herself in it, but I do now and then. He so far seems pretty able to cope with it, although he does dig in and get into a power struggle with her now and then. As I'd expect. He is two.
