My son can't eat gluten. Allergy, intolerance, whatever it is called, all I know is when he eats wheat he goes berserk. He has been on a gluten free diet for a year and a half. It is really difficult to maintain but worth it. We've tried to experiment a few times, especially now that he is stabilized on meds and doing really well, so we try some wheat just to see what happens, and every single time he winds up on a screaming binge. In fact we just tried again last week, he ate 3 pieces of pizza. Bad idea. There is a whole way of thinking that gluten can be bad for kids on the autism spectrum. He does have a PDD-NOS diagnosis which I'm not actually sure whether or not I buy, but he definitely has ADHD in addition to bipolar, and some are now considering ADHD to be on the spectrum. All I care is that it is improving his ability to control himself, and maybe allowing him to be taking only low doses of his meds as opposed to higher. Who knows.
