This is a biggie for your son. Just learning that you have a life long illness is devastating. He needs time to adjust and he will show anger. It doesn't mean you allow it. Download the book "A Storm In My Brain" for him and read it with him.

I hate with a passion these pdocs that give meds to a preteen or teen that cause so much weight gain. It is very hard weight gain to loos. It does terrible to a young persons self esteem to see the body they are so use to change so rapidly. I would call the doc and say...ok, what else have you got...every expert in the country knows that this weight gain eventually makes a kid non-compliant. There has to be something else that is comparable to the risperdal. A good pdoc cares about the weight gain. Rapid weight gain like that makes a young person angrier than the illness. I'm sure others will be able to help with this. I believe seroquel (sp) is in this range of meds and is a lesser weight gain. The wweight gain has to be treated by the docs. They know that much weight gain is not normal. It may be all they have in the hospital because the cost is cheaper. Who knows..Do a search on the weight gain on this med and see what you find out and see what is comparable to it.
