Hi Rhonda, :welcomegp

Not really. Bipolar is a vicious cycle, up & down, down & up, sometimes it's like a bungee cord. It's not like an 8-second bull ride, when the 8 seconds are up, you let go & the cowboys pull you off & the clown gets the bull's attention.

If bipolar is left untreated, it has a kindling effect & makes the bipolar worse. It's really trial & error. One thing they do know, is that some kids have a reverse reaction to what a med is supposed to do. Stimulants & antidepressants can make bipolar worse.

It sounds like you are not the boy's regular caregiver & that can cause the kid to act out. Most of the time they are better w/someone who is not their caregiver.

It would be great if you could get into a NAMI group (National Alliance Mentally Ill). NAMI rhymes w/Mommy. With the education & support you get, you could become part of your son/daughter & spouse's support group.

What else is he on, besides the seroquel? Is he on an antibiotic? If he gets too out of control, you may have to take him to an emergency room or call the police. When you do call the police, tell them in your initial call that you are dealing w/mental illness. It is no crime to have a mental illness, it just helps how they are going to deal w/him & the family.
