We found out yesterday that Joe (Jordon and Alex's step brother on dada's side) was hit in Bagdad. A bomb exploded right between him and his Sergeant. His Sergeant lost both his legs and Joe was hit my shrapnel in the legs and in the head and into his brain. He is alive but has been in and out of consciousness and they are not sure what the severity of the brain injury will be. His brain is currently swollen from the trauma so they are just trying to deal with that right now. He was flown to an army hospital in Germany and the army is flying Chris (his mom) and Joe's brother Ben to Germany to be with him. My kids are worried sick and well… I thought maybe you all could help me pray for him?

I am so very sorry. Head injuries like this are, tragically, one of the common casualities of the war in Iraq. It is so horrible and I am so very sorry for your family.

Joe is awake and they have sent him to Walter Reed in DC. his mom and brother are with him. He is having flash backs but doesn't remember everything. Bits and pieces so far. Dragged his buddy away and for help with the schrapnel in his head. Doesn't remember that. He understandably says he can't go back. Double edged sword in a way. He is remembering which is good brain damage wise but bad mental health wise. So happy he is alive. He will be kept stateside for quite awhile now. Hope they never send him back. He apparently asked my ex for my and the boys cell numbers. We are all looking forward to a call.

Thank you all for your prayers. They worked so far.......

I dreamed of many things when he was born ...

I read this & didn't comment. It brought back some bad memories of my nephew & a friend of my boys'. They were injured in Iraq too. I hope another nephew made it home this month, uninjured. This was his 3rd tour of duty in Iraq.

I'm glad Joe is awake & I hope he calls you.

Nick is on SSI, topamax, abilify, buspar, (Asperger's, bipolar, anxiety); prilosec (reflux); zyrtec-D, nasal spray (allergies); metformin (recently dx'd insulin resistance)

Prayers up today. Sorry just getting in on this thread. Memory is a good and bad thing, but so necessary in the recovery of a brain injury.

There was a movie on HBO with Kevin Bacon called Taking Chance a true story about an officer who volunteered to escort a soldier's body home from Iraq. A beautiful story, I cried through half of it. Maybe not one to watch if you have someone over there but the respect that people across the country showed was so nice to see.

This sounds very positive to me, Lynn. Asking for people and remembering things is, I think, a sign that Joe may not have suffered severe brain damage. Please keep us posted.

It sounds very, very promising. I know a bit about head injuries because both my son and grandson have experienced them. What you are describing is very encouraging, and I would not be surprised if he is able to make a full recovery with time.

I am so sorry to hear this. You guys certainly didn't need more bad news.

He does sound quite well though. I had a nephew hit by a car at 16, flew over the car and landed on his head. He was fine at the time but later slipped into a coma for 5 weeks. No one knew if he was ever going to wake up. Listening to the doctors, I thought he was a goner. He did wake up though but he is not the same person. He has a lot of memory loss and becomes violent quite quickly when provoked (sort of like our kids).

However, your boys' step brother seems to be much better off than he was. He will still probably have some memory loss but some of those memories he can do without I am sure.
