I know he has a tough road ahead of him but I think he is starting to realize you guys are in his corner and that he will do better. Just keep reminding him that if he is struggling with the material or the organizational skills or anything, that he can come to you, no questions asked and you will do what you can to get him the help that he needs.

I know that should be obvious but I think he needs to hear it. Tell him you just want him to graduate so all his options are open to him later. He can figure out the rest later but for now, he just needs that diploma.

I really do have a good feeling about this. It seems to be slowly coming together.

BTW, they can't force him to go to alternative school. He and you can still choose home school or on line school. You have to agree to the placement. It isn't completely one-sided. I didn't like that they worded it that way to you. Hopefully they only said it to scare Matt but still....

Ok, so he gets one more shot. He heard it straight from their mouths and saw how you fought for him. Let's hope this will be the magic "tonic" he needs in order to take this seriously. If he can toe the line, he might win "them" over. I know that schools get tired of giving our kids second and third and fourth chances, but every once in a while they amaze everyone, KWIM?

It sounds successful overall, in no small part to your and DH's support of him. I agree he needs it. He needs to come to you if he feels he is getting behind or if he needs support. You know that, of course, but I do think conveying it to him would be good. Let us hope he can do something with this opportunity!

I also didn't like the "you make one mistake and off to alternative school you go". He expressed how he would not go to alternative school. There should be other options available as well. I truly hope that Matt will be able to hold it together and finish. Since he has an IEP, I was wondering what his accomodations were? Does he get extra time for work, tests etc. Is he allowed breaks if he needs them. I want to know if they are following the IEP. Also what classification does he have?

Hope all goes well. It is encouraging that Matt participated in the discussion and felt he was part of the solution, that it wasn't imposed on him against his will. I feel he will have more buy-in to the decisions. From where I sit, I can see that he has matured and is doing better, despite the obvious fact that he backslides and still has a long way to go. Here's hoping he can stay focused and will do what it takes to stay in school and get that diploma that kids need now more than ever in these tough economic times.

Sounds like, all in all, it went very well, Chris. I do agree with Tina about the ultimatum they gave him, though. I hope he will use this "last chance" wisely.

When Dd was in high school most of her teachers were great but she had a couple like Matt's principal who were hard nosed. I would tell her that I know so-in-so is a real idiot teacher but they were in charge and she would have to play by their rules until out of their class. Most of the time it worked except for PE. She and that teacher butted heads all semester. Don't know how she ever passed that class. Maybe the teacher dreaded having her repeat!

They wrote up a contract for behavior. This week is end semester/finals week. So he is off until Friday. When he goes back Friday, he and I will sign the contract, he will turn in his work, and head off to the "quiet room" to take 3 open-book finals. Hopefully, he can pass 3 classes. Driver's ed is a fail. So no, he hasn't made it back to school yet. The princ. said "this is what I want to do because I DON'T WANT TO SET MATT UP FOR FAILURE." That was a nice thing to say... maybe she is trying.

We'll see.

One failed class is not a big deal. If he can pass the others, he can make up driver's ed in the summer. This sounds positive. Let's hope he can do something with this.

A. has finals this week, too. Unfortunately we did not have this information and I had scheduled a psy doc appointment for Wed. which I called to reschedule (GRRRRR.....) Best laid plans!

We have tdoc appt today. I found a note to one of his friends that says "I have taken responsibility for all the things I've done." Interesting!!!!

So things are on track for this Africa mission trip. The leader man going has suggested that Matt and "16 girl" present a Bible lesson to our Bible study group every Sunday till they leave. Last Sunday was their first. He did great. I was so impressed with both kids. But given his situation 1 yr ago....noone would've thought it possible. God is at work.......but everything in His time not ours. Praise God!

Girls, sorry I've not been on here much. I'm so busy with work. I have to work this whole weekend (unusual), but need the extra money. Anyway wanted to check in quickly. Update.... he is a "soph" with a couple credits short of a junior. Snow day today so he didn't get back to school. Will go Tues...Mon is MLK day so no school. Africa is mission trip with 5 adults, him and 16 y/o girl from church.

So just so you all aren't jealous of his progress..... we went to tdoc appt. Drug test positive for THC... I was a little bit surprised, but not much. I suspected. I WAS TICKED!! We got into a big fight...me, him and dh. He told me to get out of his f... life. He said that he willl quit smoking, but maybe I should start so I can relax. Ewwwwwwwww... I was mad. Long story short... I cried for a while, left the house. Came home and he apologized. I told him that I WILL NEVER FORGET WHAT HE SAID TO ME. and I won't.

Gotta go to bed.. up at 5 to work as a real nurse........haven't done that bedside nursing for 2 yrs. I'll be working with my dd so it will be a fun sort of day. Love you guys.......

That seems to be his issue, that he wants to "be a man"

and not be told what to do.

Yet, he seems to want appoval and really wants to conform. He is conflicted over values

and needs to work it out for himself. I still believe he is going to grow up to be a fine man,

and I also believe that, for Matt, honey

He sounds JUST LIKE Jordon, Chris. All in all things sound better than worse to me. I don't know what it is about the pot! I hope he can hold it together and that the school thing works out and I hate the ultimatum re: school also.
