Problems getting back on schedule |
Lead | |
|
After 2 weeks off for the holidays, my son has had problems getting back into schedule. He attends a small individualized private school and also goes to the
YMCA for afterschool care. Since last week I have had to return to the school for him crying uncontrollably and take him to my dentist appt. w/ me to calm
down before going back. Yesterday he had a meltdown at the Y because other kids touched his skateboard - he was crying uncontrollably and had to be picked up.
Then this a.m. he became very edgy when his brother chose to have the same breakfast as him then spiralled downhill: moody, cursing, etc. I had to take the
other 2 children to a neighbors to go to school. Jeremy threatened to break everything in the house while I was gone. When I returned I tried to distract him
with a job of refilling our fountain while I refilled the dog food but he only screamed more and threw recycling. I called my husband to come home and help.
He went to the front yard pulling up the grass and eventually ran off out of the neighborhood. My husband followed him for a while until he returned home. I
was worried that we were going to have to call the police. DH finally got him off to school complaining about all the kids bullying him. He absolutely can
not ignore the slightest snicker without reacting.

Sorry to hear this Kristi. It sounds like more than just school stress routine though. He sounds like he is depressed. Can you get him in to see the pdoc? I
think he needs it.
<<>> I know they are not easy to deal with when they are like this.

Yes, that is such a shame and I am sorry to hear about it.
I agree with the above, call in the troops, pdoc and tdoc ASAP, to try to "batton down the hatches"!

It sounds like he is having a really rough time. Was he having trouble before the holidays as well? I agree with Heather and Kristen. It sounds like
it's time to call the pdoc.

Fortunately he goes back on Friday. We have been trying to wean him off the abilify (he is suffering muscle spasms) but he has not handled it well. I am at my
wits end on how to get him more stable. I feel that he is on too much medication overall and it has been hard to find the right balance.

Is he still having the spasms? Could the Invega also cause these spasms? it looks to me like he is only on three meds now, is this right? The Strattera of
course with the Abilify being weaned down could be causing these behaviors. That is what it sounds like to me now that we have more information. What do you
think? Is this possible, in your opinion?

Ditto to what Heather said! Strattera without the stabilizing effect of the Abilify could be at the root of this. In your shoes, I'd drop the Strattera
until you can get with the doc. It may help, and it won't harm.
I think our kids should get an automatic "stay at home" from the doc whenever they have to go through a med change. Very stressful for all concerned.

I agree with Connie - Definitely, our kids need a "get out of school" free card.
And a cruise would be nice, too. You know, the kind with inpatient psych treatment available 24/7.

Sorry I dropped Abilify from my signature because he was being weaned off of it but he is still on 5mg. along with Invega, Strattera, Lamictal then another
drug to counteract the spasms ( which hasn't seemed to help) I tried taking away the Strattera on my own but he wasn't concentrating at all. Our goal
has been to get Lamictal to a therapeutic dose so that all the other meds could be discontinued if possible
but it has been too long of a process and hindered when he has problems. I feel like it is one stinky onion!

I use that phrase too ("it's one stinky onion")! People at work laugh at me because with kids you find yourself quoting movies all the time. So I
use that one with a terrible Shrek voice.
Keep your chin up! Med changes do stink, but I hear good things about Lamictal!

It seems unlikely to me that other meds can safely be discontinued. My dd takes both Abilify and Lamictal. She originally took Risperdal as her anti-psychotic
and I will say that both drugs (Lamictal versus anti-psychotics) do two totally different things.
So, I'm not sure if that is realistic from what I know of these meds. Is there a reason you want him off the other meds (side effects)? Most people, adults or kids, take at least 3 medications to control their symptoms. Just a thought. I hope he is doing better as of today....I love the stinky onion comments, that is a cute one.
