I have nothing to add but am so sad for poor Taz also. How horrible for him to be in constant fear. I personally don't know how you cope. I sure hope that the med increase works and takes hold VERY soon.

He's mad at me today, oh what a surprise. He's throwing things & knocking them over. He's still avoiding his room, but is going to the bathroom w/o someone standing near the door.

Thanks ladies for your input.

He does check the door many times from the time he gets home from school until bedtime. Sometimes he'll still be awake & call for me to sit w/him and asks if the door is locked. He locked Andy out of the house yesterday, while Andy was outside doing something in the yard. Tdoc said that she felt he had intrusive thoughts & that all this was a compulsion.

I don't know if I mentioned this, but I'm sleep deprived, pdoc did...

Sounds more like intrusive delusional thoughts or something than OCD to me, too. Hope he can work through this....let us know if it continues or not.

Or getting up & checking it after the last person is in bed, just to see if it is locked. Then checking it when you get up to go to the bathroom at 3 a.m. Maybe somehow it became unlocked, Man, have I done that.

Just for general info, in OCD, there is a normal worry that has escalated out of proportion to the situation (the obsession) that is causing the compulsive behaviour. For example, if you worry about people breaking into the house, you check that the door is locked before going to bed. OCD is checking the door 3 times before going to bed. Or checking every 5 minutes.

In John's case, there doesn't seem to be a clear link between an obsession and a compulsion. He does seem to...

Sorry I don't have any advice but can relate. A few years ago we went through this with E - she couldn't be alone in the house, even though she was old enough. She was afraid that someone was always in her closet, or that dh or I would get hurt somehow. Lots of unrational ears. I don't remember exactlyright now, but I think we had a med tweak and it helped.

Glad to hear from you, Jody, although I wish it were under better circumstances. I agree with Krisitn. It doesn't sound like OCD to me, although I don't have any personal experience with it. I think that you need to make an appointment for him to see the p-doc ASAP (if you ever get to speak with her personally!). Please keep us posted.

I too would make sure all knives and sharp objects were locked up. What if he mistook a family member for a robber in the middle of the night? Hope increasing his meds helps.

I got a message from the pdoc today, and of course it was a voice mail. It sounds like the tdoc called her & told her what was going on. She said it might be due to the seasonal change; however she didn't have his file & didn't know the dose of lamictal he was on, but said she thought it was 200mg. She said to bump it another 50mg and call her. I called back to tell her she put him on 250mg about 1 to 2 wks ago & I would bump it to 300mg but got voice mail; what a...

At one point they thought Alex had OCD so I read up on it a lot. This doesn't sound like OCD. It sounds like paranoia/delusions. I don't think the tdoc can help much.

I would say he needs either more Seroquel. I believe the aps work better on the irrational thinking than the mood stabilizers.

Please lock up all the knives. You never know when their fears will drive them to do anything, including kill themselves, to make the fear go away.

My 8 yo ds has that problem. He goes long stretches without worrying too much then all of a sudden he starts having anxiety about someone breaking in and checks all the doors. Won't stay in a room by himself, especially if dark. I have to wait right outside the bathroom door or he freaks. He does have social, phobic and general anxiety along with everything else. Not much advise, we just ride it out.

My dd has had some very similar problems. At one point we thought she might have an underlying anxiety disorder. Now the pdoc feels it's more paranoia/psychosis related. Raising her risperdal seemed to really help the problem especially the night time robber fears. She also had some weather related ocdish problems that raising her lamictal (she needs between 300 - 400mg) seemed to help.

I would be really concerned that he's grabbing a knife to protect himself....
